The Gaoping District Branch of the Public Security Bureau of Nanchong City, Sichuan Province recently cracked a major counterfeit currency case. The main culprit in the case was sentenced for possessing guns and counterfeit foreign currency. After being released from prison, he was inspired by the plot of the movie and colluded with his party to print counterfeit banknotes with a face value of 3.6 million US dollars (about 28.08 million Hong Kong dollars), which fooled the money detector. The case has been transferred for prosecution.
The police said that in March 2024, the Gaoping District Branch of the Public Security Bureau of Nanchong City received an anonymous report that someone would conduct a counterfeit currency transaction in Nanchong in the near future. In the same month, the police arrested suspects Guo and Yu and 5 others at the transaction site, and then found two counterfeit currency manufacturing gangs. After investigation, Guo got inspiration from a movie about counterfeit money. At the end of 2021, he invited Yu and others to use the ghost money printing factory as a cover to actually print counterfeit US dollars, but stopped due to repeated failed attempts.
At the beginning of 2023, Guo and Yu printed fake US dollars by making high-definition templates and purchasing advanced equipment. At the end of the same year, the two met Feng Long, who made counterfeit RMB, and proposed to the latter to sell counterfeit RMB on their behalf and split the illegal profits 30-70. Guo and others later used online car-hailing as a cover to sell fake US dollars and counterfeit RMB in the vicinity of Nanchong many times, and were finally arrested by Nanchong police. More than 1.5 million yuan in counterfeit US dollars (about 11.7 million Hong Kong dollars) and more than 400,000 yuan in counterfeit RMB (about 440,000 Hong Kong dollars) were seized in the case, 21 suspects were arrested, 6 counterfeit currency manufacturing workshops were destroyed, 3 sets of counterfeiting equipment were confiscated, and a cross-provincial criminal network integrating raw material supply, counterfeit currency, distribution, and use was successfully destroyed.
