Law enforcement authorities said that a man recently received a message through the mobile communication software WeChat, saying that the business urgently needed RMB turnover and asked the man to help with the exchange and proposed to pay in Hong Kong dollars, which was higher than the market price. The fraudster pretended to deposit money by writing a bad cheque. The man did not suspect the fraud and deposited nearly RMB 920,000 (approximately HKD 1 million) into the fraudster's bank account. In the end, the fraudster's cheque could not be cashed and the man realized that he had been cheated. In the past week, law enforcement agencies have received 22 cases of online shopping scams related to foreign currency exchange, with the amount of money defrauded reaching HK$3.55 million.
